The world is too materialistic

Post  Cpt. Crinkle on 10/10/2009, 21:47

We want too many material items. We all fall to temptation. The way I try not to be tempted is I pray each time I have a want for a material item. I would love to live like the diciples did I know that is a hard life but I would rather have a life of strong faith over material items.

Uh. This is a slightly difficult topic cause of the modern world. You can own many things in life. Depends on the money you make. THAT is the REAL world. In a religiosity sense if you won't give up your things to pray or go outside and enjoy god, then you are too matrialistic

You must take the time to be with God but you must also consider God before your material items.

I wish you could actually do that.
However, none of us can say with honesty that they think about god all the time and put Hume before thinks like money and profit and the real dang world that we live in.
God Is good
god is great....
But does no good for us to end up on the street for it.

^We wouldn't because God would provide for us. The way I look at it, there is nothing wrong with possesions, AS LONG AS they don't RULE your life, ie; they don't get between you and God. If they rule your life, and they are all you think about then that's wrong. I mean I have TONS of possesions, but yet I always think about how can I better serve him. In fact my possesions sometimes help me with that, because they are a veicle in which I can get more people here, and thus exposed to God through the C.A.A. meetings. Smile

Yeah exactly, and lets face it, I love those things! But hey, I share them with everybody, and use them sometimes to attract people here so they can exposed to christ etc... So I wouldn't say possesions are bad, as long as God comes first, but they do hamper you, as you have to devote time to taking care of them. so really, they are more of a grey area, in my opnion. So pretty much as long as God is first, you're good.

Dost thou haveth sarcasm in thine post, powned? (the last two words make me giggle)

I was only asking Peter (indirectly) to explain why he brought up the fact that he doesn't like material possessions, since he failed to do that in response to your post (which asked the same thing). It's not like I was trying to 'steal your thunder' or something.

^ Yeah, it kinda just comes down to personal preferance. Sure in some respects less possesions are deffinetly good. But I like my stuff, it helps me unwind, and helps distract me from all the stuff in the "real world" that I always have to deal with. They're like an escape. For awhile I can only concentrate on what I'm working on, and not worry about anything else. It's nice, helps keep me sane. Razz

@Powned: Exactly. @ Crinkle: How do you know? You're in no position to judge. You like wasting time with pointless online games, I do it with LEGO. It all depends on prefferance. LEGO is my life, it keeps me sane, and connects me with my friends. Saying "I can survive with fewer" how do you know? Are you me. No, no you're not.

I can have as many frekin electronics as I want.
You can have as little brains as you want.

It's all preferance and it doesn't really matter. These
are B
mine and bens hobbies and we aren't going to go with 'less of them'

Have you heard what Jesus said to the rich man. "It's hard for a rich man to get into heaven, it's like trying to fit a camel through the eye of a needle.

I'm not going to quote Bible at you, Crinkle, mostly because I find that people who quote Bible at other people are often the ones who miss the point.
Have you ever heard the old adage "practice what you preach"? (this isn't Bible, just an old saying).
Well, what it means is that you should practice what you preach. Get what I'm saying?
Ok, here it is in plain English: if you want everyone to live like the Amish, you need to go move into a log cabin in Pennsylvania yourself first. Without computer games. Without tv. Without your mP3 player, your telephone, your family's cellphone, your electricity, your fridge, your washing machine. All of these things are material 'wealth' and not necessary for survival or a close relationship with God. You only have a fridge because you like to not eat salted, stale old meat all the time, with moldy cheese and stale bread to make sandwiches. You could do without all the things mentioned above, just like Ben could do without all his legos. But I don't see you getting rid of your fridge, you hypocrite.

Also, I would like to add that Jesus is commonly depicted as wearing sandals to protect his feet, and clothing to cover himself. Neither of these things are necessary for survival or closeness to God, Jesus was simply indulging himself in the joys of not having cut up feet and not being tossed into jail for indecent exposure (or the ancient Roman equivalent thereof...)

Until you are willing to give up all of the things you own that you do not need, you do not have any right to even think about what other people should or should not have.

Now I'm angry enough to quote some Bible at you.
Matthew 7:5
You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
