Overpopulation

Post  0001 on 1/17/2010, 13:33

Is the world getting filled up with too much people? Or is what we call "overpopulation" simply a metaphor for the fact our recent generations are messing thw world up faster then previous ones? What do you think?

The world will fill up with people as medicine gets better and life expectancy goes up, as well as infant mortality goes down. There is no natural thing, such a mesquetos, that can redially kill off humans. It's possible, that biblically, we could see another 40+ days of rain....

graph
World population is increasing, but the definition of "too much" is vague. Heck, once we reach the earth's carrying capacity, the population will go down anyway. Albeit due to famine.

Yeah, I think there is a natural system in place that kind of checs the population, such as disease and such. I think that yes the world population is growing, but that it's not leading to overpopulation, I mean the worlds a very big place.

Well people are not dying off as fast and people keep having kids so there is a point at which resources become hard to get.

Interesting graphs, they do confirm what I had always thought. And as you say, it's not a problem now, but it could be.

I say we should be like China and set limits on the number of kids people can have.

No thanks. I prefer the idea that we should stay away from being like China in about every way possible.

Besides, China only limits on how much girls you have.

If I'm not mistaken, Chinese people can have as many sons as they want, but can only have one daughter. Which is why most adopted babies from China are girls.

But if you want overpopulation, China is the place to go lol... Laughing

But it's not a good idea morally. You know how messed up our government would be if they did that?

I agree with Joe. That's not a decision anyone should make except the families......In MOST circumstances.

Well.. At one point or another, things will have to be controlled... I mean, medicine will get better & better, & basically we will have more people alive than ever before. & space to live is lessening.. The only way I can see overpopulation being alright is if somehow we are able to make a city underwater & filter oxygen to the people who live in the aqua city...

Well there is a lot of ocean space to be sure. That would be some engineering project though. Shocked I guess controlling the amount of kids people can have would be a tad easier then submerged cities. But being the science fiction geek I am, I'm gonna totally advocate the underwater city idea. cheers
