Climate Change

Post  Jedi Joe on 8/19/2009, 13:44

Do you believe climate change is happening? Or do you believe it all is just a fake? Please post your opinion on this matter.

I believe it's real, but it doesn't pose a threat, and man has little to no effect on it. Because if we check historically, climate changes such as these (And sometimes worse) have been happening before we had cars and other "pollutants". (Except for flatulating cows... Razz )

I think it's real, and as you say there have been many periods of time where the climate has changed drastically (IE the Ice ages etc...) However I do believe man has some effect on it, because of all the exhaust from industry and vehicles that we constantly pump into the atmosphere. My belief is that our doings may change or alter natural cycles. However I do not have any research to date to back up this claim. Wink

True, man may have a little effect, but it's not America we should be going after. It's countries like China and India that pollute their environment and do nothing about it...

Yes, the ones that have no environmental regulations at all. They just pump some noxitious stuff out. Creating things like acid rain, and sickening people like those children in China with lead poisioning.

Cows.
Don't like 'greenhouse gases'?
kill all the cows and give free steak to everyone.
i like steak.
We, man, contribute to like.. less than 2 PERCENT of the pollution or... 'greenhouse gases'.

I have a question... (yes.. i know i like to use the enter key)

what happened to the Ozone problem that was going to kill the world?

The hole in the ozone layer is still there, it's supposed to be repairing itself by 2040. Just make sure you pray and wear sunscreen.

And yes, I do agree that climate change has been highly overhyped once Al Gore got his hands on it.

Climate change is more of natural process, but I think we do have some effect, as to how much I'm not certain. You see, like all politics, there is some small granules of truth to it all, but the actual facts and data keeps getting twisted and manipulated for political gain. Thus making it extremally difficult to actually find real facts in it all. However I know that SOMETHING is happening, because the weather here has changed noticably in just the past few years. We are now getting colder winters, and hotter summers. But beyond that, I don't have much data.....yet.

According to http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science/recentac.html, "Carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the atmosphere increased from approximately 280 parts per million (ppm) in pre-industrial times to 382 ppm in 2006 according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Earth Systems Research Laboratory, a 36 percent increase."

36%>2%

I believe the us should adopt a cap & trade system like what Europe has to regulate C02 emissions. Until then, we have no right to impose on China and India, as we give no real economic incentive to corporations to be environmentally friendly. We should also switch to nuclear power. Yes, I know, what do we do with all that plutonium? Well, why not use it to make even more electricity? After all, the French seem to be pulling it off, why can't we?

That, or we concentrate on geothermal & solar. I don't think wind is reliable enough.

Nuclear is a good way to go. Wind can work in certain areas, but it is quite limited. You bring up many good points, expecially the economic ones.

Yes... the one downfall of America's nuclear policy. NO RECYCLING.
that way it all ends up in the ground. Great huh?

And as for car emissions... America is MUCH more strict than Europe. Ever wonder why you don't see very many European cars here in the USA?
and by that I don't mean Porches or Ferrari's.I mean cars like Citrons, Fiat, Alfa Rameo, etc.
Plus... all you have to do is go shopping for a Lamborghini.... Right on their site it says... 'due to the emission standards of the EPA, certain models are not available in the United States.

Cap n' Trade is not the answer. We'd be fined for turning our thermostat up. Besides, like Pown3d said, we have good enough emission restrictions. Solar energy is the way to go in my book, we can make it very efficient and very cheap if we keep working on it.

Re: Climate Change

Post  Sgt Angry Egg on 9/28/2009, 22:25

The usefulness of the cap n' trade system is to force companies to find ways of making cheaper, greener energy through an economic incentive. As I said earlier, the waste from nuclear power can be reused. Although I do agree that solar is a good way to go. The problem is just convincing people to put their money into it. Heck, my mom won't even buy fluorescent lights because they are more expensive. There are a million alternative energy sources out there, the challenge is getting people to be willing to give them serious funding. The way to do that, I think, is not through scare tactics. It is to make it more expensive for people to use old energy sources. Specifically, to find a way to make the big companies pay for all the carbon they are releasing. The big companies are where all the money is, and it will make them more likely to lobby and pass laws and further funding into other, cheaper energy sources.

Yes, we need to get companies to do more of this stuff, and not burden it on the people like Mr. Obama wants to do.

Actually it should be the responsibility of the people AND companies. We all share the same world you know. Wink

So we need to regulate the thermostats and have the government track how much miles you've driven? We should have the government watch over us, taking away what God wants us to have, just to feed overhyped propoganda? Sorry, I'm a conservative, and I believe in what's right and what America stands for. And I do NOT by any means support the socialist Cap and Trade bill.

Well I am agreeing with the basic idea of it. I do not agree with the governement tracking everything. I just think incentives at the business level is needed, like Europe has. On another note, why is everything that is new and different socialist? I'm conservative as well, but I keep an open mind. Wink

HAHAHA, they would never get away with that, it'd be unconstitutional. Now if they DID attach a little fine print about tracking emissions of eveybody, then I would be whole-heartedly against it. I just want business incentives, in the form of tax-breaks etc. to encourage renewable and alternative energy sources. Not just for the whole climate change thing, but to promote good stewardship. I mean building an entire civilization based around limited fuel supplies seems a bit foolish don't it? Wink
